History
Fort Pienc takes its name from a former defensive fort. Today it's a lively Eixample neighbourhood, shaped by the Estació del Nord, its market and the transformation of Glòries.
Fort Pienc sits in the Eixample district of Barcelona, on its north-eastern side, roughly bounded by Avinguda Meridiana, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Passeig de Sant Joan and Carrer de Sardenya. The postcode is 08013.
Metro line L1 has three stops right by the neighbourhood: Arc de Triomf, Marina and Glòries. Several bus routes run along Avinguda Meridiana and Gran Via, and the Estació del Nord runs intercity coaches across Catalonia and Spain. Bicing stations are spread through the area.
From the defensive fort that stood on this land in the 18th century, when Barcelona was a fortified city. After the walls came down the place name survived and eventually named the present-day neighbourhood.
Josep Llinàs's Fort Pienc Market, Plaça de Fort Pienc, the Estació del Nord park with Beverly Pepper's sculptures, the Arc de Triomf, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya and L'Auditori de Barcelona. It can all be walked in an afternoon.
It takes place in mid-May over three days, with concerts, sardanes, giants and family activities centred on Plaça de Fort Pienc. Exact dates are set each year by the festivities committee.
It is a central residential area with a municipal market, health centre, public school, library, civic centre and metro line L1, plus one of the largest urban parks in the Eixample next door. Being close to Glòries and the Arc de Triomf makes it very well connected; in exchange, main roads such as Meridiana carry heavy traffic.
